Catania

This answer provoked some minor controversy in the match that I was involved in – but it's correct.

Catania is the industrial hub of Sicily, famous for its petrochemical industry and the extraction of sulphur. It's the second largest city on the island, after Palermo, and its conurbation is the seventh largest in Italy. As this map (on Wikipedia) shows, it's on the east coast of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna – about 20 miles from the summit, in a south–south–easterly direction.
